THE CREATION OF OUR PRODUCTS
The Dr Wilfred’s range of products was formulated & developed in blind tests with over fourteen formulations over a period of twelve months with vets to be able determine the best grooming wet range for dogs.
The aim of the blind tests was to determine the washing action of the shampoos, the ease of application of products, the coat condition after use of products and the effect (if any) of using certain fragrances & strength of fragrances on the dog’s senses.
The results culminated in the 3 products (the fourth product gloss soon to be launched) with a very low coconut fragrance so as not to affect the dog’s sense of smell. Many products openly advertise fragrances which can adversely affect dogs sense of smell.
The tests also looked at the pH levels of different products used and the benefits or adverse effects an acid pH had on dog’s skin.
A dog’s skin pH is in an optimal condition at a level of pH 7 – 7.8, and regular testing of products showed no adverse effects to the dog’s skin. No itching, drying or flaking. Unlike humans, dogs do not have an acid mantle but do have their own protection in their fur and natural oils contained in the skin, so it is important that topical products used to wash & groom your dog have a mild washing action and low fragrance.
Artificial scents, fragrances, and colours tend to be harsh and may cause allergic reactions as well as stripping away protective oils from a dogs coat & skin, University research has found certain cases where sulphate sodium salts (which could result in too much cleaning) can cause irritation & drying and can also cause significant trauma if it comes into contact with your dog’s eyes.
